Parliament: Kenya's presidential elections underway

The presidential and parliamentary elections have started in Kenya. Recent polls put longtime opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga just ahead of former Vice President William Ruto. They are competing to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, who led the country for more than a decade.

In the country popular with tourists, riots and violence are not uncommon during elections - especially when a close result is expected. The reason for this is tensions between the various ethnic groups. In addition, there is currently the tense economic situation due to rising food and fuel prices.

Nevertheless, Kenya is considered one of the most stable countries on the African continent. Both candidates had announced in advance that they would maintain close ties with the USA and Europe. Both declared that in the event of a defeat they would not contest the election. Around 22 million people are called upon to cast their votes. According to the constitution, results must be published within seven days.
