Presidency of the US House of Representatives: Kevin McCarthy could replace Nancy Pelosi

He could soon be number three in the state as Republicans nominate Kevin McCarthy for the House presidency. The 57-year-old could succeed prominent Democrat Nancy Pelosi in January. But the vote is not secured yet.

After the congressional elections in the USA, the Republicans nominated their faction leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, as a candidate for the presidency of the House of Representatives. In a secret internal vote, the 57-year-old prevailed on Tuesday evening (local time) with 188 votes to 31 against MP Andy Biggs, who was positioned further to the right, as US media reported unanimously.

McCarthy is thus the favorite for the actual election of the important office of the chairman of the House of Representatives in January. He hopes to replace Democrat Nancy Pelosi. Whoever chairs the chamber is number three in the state ranking after the US president and his vice president.

However, the number of dissenting votes shows that McCarthy will not have it easy, it said. In the January election, he must achieve a majority of 218 votes in the chamber. So he's dependent on getting votes from both moderate Republicans and right-wing supporters of ex-President Donald Trump, who on Tuesday announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

In the House of Representatives, only a narrow majority for the Republicans is apparent so far, but the result is not yet certain. According to the AP news agency, there is only one seat missing from the necessary majority of 218 mandates with eleven results still outstanding. US President Joe Biden's Democrats were able to defend control of the Senate - the second chamber of Congress - in the midterm elections a week ago.
