RTL / ntv trend barometer: German majority for oil embargo

A majority of Germans believe that Chancellor Scholz is not too hesitant on the issue of arms deliveries to Ukraine. A majority also advocates that Germany no longer imports Russian oil.

More than half of Germans are in favor of a complete ban on imports of Russian oil. This is the result of the latest RTL/ntv trend barometer. When asked whether Germany should stop all oil supplies from Russia, 57 percent said yes. 38 percent reject such an import ban.

Support for stopping all oil supplies from Russia is strongest among supporters of the Greens (81 percent). Most of the East Germans (57 percent) and especially the supporters of the AfD (92 percent) are against an import ban.

32 percent of Germans share the criticism of the behavior of the Federal Chancellor, not supporting Ukraine enough and too hesitantly in the delivery of heavy weapons. A majority of 63 percent is still of the opinion that Olaf Scholz's behavior towards Ukraine on this issue is appropriate and not too hesitant.

The supporters of the Greens (40 percent) and the Union parties (41 percent) most often share the criticism of the Chancellor's behavior with regard to the arms deliveries, but the majority also believe that Scholz's behavior is appropriate and not too hesitant.

48 percent of Germans currently fear that the war in Ukraine could escalate into a war between Russia and NATO and lead to a third world war. Roughly as many (50 percent) do not fear this. Supporters of the Greens (36 percent) are the least concerned about an escalation of the war, while supporters of the AfD are most concerned about a third world war (79 percent).

As in the previous week, a narrow majority of Germans (55 percent) are in favor of Ukraine joining the European Union. 38 percent do not think it is right to include Ukraine. Supporters of the Greens (71 percent) in particular are in favor of Ukraine joining the EU, while supporters of the SPD (57 percent), FDP (56 percent) and Union parties (59 percent) are somewhat more cautious. A large majority of AfD supporters reject Ukraine's accession to the EU.

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa on behalf of RTL Germany on May 27 and 30, 2022. Database: 1006 respondents. Statistical error tolerance: /- 3 percentage points.
