"Russia turns winter into a weapon": Aid conference collects one billion euros for Ukraine

Because of the Russian attacks, people in Ukraine in many places have no electricity, no heating, no water. "Russia wants to turn winter into a weapon of war," says French Foreign Minister Colonna. But international supporters want to help the war-torn country - and are collecting a good one billion euros in aid.

The international Ukraine conference in Paris has pledged aid worth a good one billion euros. The main focus is on material aid to restore the energy and water supply, for the transport and health services and for the food sector, said French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna. The aid is to be provided from now until the end of winter. "With the help, we have a direct impact on the lives of millions of people."

France is contributing 125 million euros, of which 50 million are planned by the end of the year, Colonna said. "Russia wants to turn winter into a weapon of war," she stressed. The international community stand together to alleviate the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

The Paris conference was about emergency aid for the construction of the most important infrastructure, which is regularly attacked by Russia. Because of the attacks, power outages or interruptions in the water supply occur again and again across Ukraine. Conference participants also agreed to create an online platform to better coordinate Ukraine's needs and international aid pledges.
