Statistics from the Berlin police: the majority of those arrested for firecracker attacks are German

On New Year's Eve, emergency services are attacked with firecrackers in Berlin. The police later reported 145 arrests. The authorities are now specifying their statistics. According to this, only 39 people are related to firecracker attacks on the police and fire brigade. Two thirds of them are German.

The Berlin police have specified their statistics on the riots on New Year's Eve. As the "Tagesspiegel" reports, citing the authorities, most of the perpetrators arrested after firecracker attacks on police officers and firefighters were German citizens and under 21 years old. Accordingly, only 38 people were arrested after such attacks - two thirds of them were German.

Initially, it was said that 145 people of 18 different nationalities were arrested on New Year's Eve. The number had triggered a debate about the lack of integration in hotspots like Neukölln, the restriction of alarm guns and better equipment for emergency services. According to the "Tagesspiegel", the number is only of limited significance, because it refers to all people who were arrested over New Year's Eve in the entire federal capital for various crimes.

Of the 139 men and six women, 45 are German, 27 Afghans, 21 Syrians, nine Iraqis, five each from Poland, Turkey and Lebanese. According to the newspaper, the list includes other people from France, Italy, Australia, India, Iran, Serbia, Jordan and African countries.

The number of 38 arrested after attacks on police officers and firefighters is also only of limited use, writes the "Tagesspiegel". Only the age gives an indication of possible backgrounds. It is clear that numerous people who have attacked emergency services have a migration background according to consistent descriptions. However, there are also mobs of hooded people who have obstructed and attacked the fire brigade. Investigators also suspect people without a migration background among them. According to the newspaper, it is unclear to what extent the radical left-wing scene was actively involved, despite isolated indications.
