Take "necessary" measures: Putin convenes Security Council after drone strikes

Moscow has been reporting explosions at military airfields since the beginning of the week, blaming drones from Kyiv. Kremlin chief Putin sees his country's internal security under threat and is in discussion with the responsible authorities to take action against the "terrorist acts".

Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin has now convened his country's security council over alleged Ukrainian drone attacks on military bases in Russia. High-ranking security officials discussed with President Putin how to ensure the country's "internal security" after Moscow classified the attacks as a threat, the Kremlin said.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov also told reporters that the authorities would take "necessary" measures to protect the country from Ukrainian attacks. "Of course, the line openly declared by the Ukrainian regime to continue such terrorist acts is a danger," said Peskov.

According to Russian sources, a drone had previously attacked an airfield in the Kursk region of Russia, which borders Ukraine. Kursk Governor Roman Starovoit said an oil tank caught fire. So nobody was injured. According to a media report on Tuesday, a military facility was also attacked with drones in the neighboring Baza region.

Videos from the industrial city of Kursk showed a large flash of fire in the airport area. According to media reports, an oil reservoir caught fire. The airport has been used exclusively for military purposes since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against the neighboring country at the end of February. It is closed to civilian flights.

On Monday, Moscow had already blamed Kyiv for drone attacks on two airfields far inland. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that three soldiers were killed and four others injured in the attacks on the "Djagilevo airfield in the Ryazan region and the Engels airfield in the Saratov region with drones of Soviet design". In addition, two aircraft were slightly damaged. The two air bases are several hundred kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
