To protect the climate: NRW turns MPs off hot water

Nothing for wimps: From December 1st, only cold water will run out of the taps in the offices of members of parliament and employees of the Düsseldorf state parliament. A letter from the President of the State Parliament states that the aim is to become a role model in terms of climate protection.

The Düsseldorf state parliament will permanently abolish hot water in the offices of members of parliament and employees. As state parliament president André Kuper from the CDU informed the deputies in writing, the instantaneous water heaters will be dismantled from December 1st.

According to Kuper's letter, which is also available to the dpa, the instantaneous water heaters have been identified as energy guzzlers. Without them, the state parliament would save 370,000 kilowatt hours a year. Because the instantaneous water heaters cannot be switched off permanently for hygienic reasons, they are now being completely removed, according to the President of the State Parliament.

As Kuper writes to the deputies, motion detectors should be installed in the corridors. District heating consumption is to be reduced by 6 percent and electricity consumption by as much as 15 percent.

According to Kuper, solar cells will be installed on the roofs of the state parliament in the coming years. In addition, the aim is to be climate neutral by 2030. In this way, the state parliament could become an "energy role model", according to Kuper in his letter to the members of parliament.
