Within the Republican Party, Donald Trump has no louder critic than Liz Cheney. In the next legislative period, however, the conservative MP will no longer sit in the US House of Representatives. Her competitor, who is supported by Trump, wins the primary in the US state of Wyoming.
Conservative MP Liz Cheney, known as a harsh critic of ex-US President Donald Trump, lost in the primaries of her Republican party in the state of Wyoming. The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney lost Tuesday's election to Trump-backed candidate Harriet Hageman, US media reported unanimously. Cheney, arguably the former President's most outspoken internal party critic, will now lose her seat in the House of Representatives in Washington.
The 56-year-old representative of the traditionally conservative Republican wing promised on election night that she would do "everything" to prevent Trump from returning to the White House. Since the Capitol storm on January 6, 2021, she has said that Trump must never go "near the Oval Office" again. The right-wing populist, who was voted out in 2020, has repeatedly brought up a possible renewed presidential candidacy in 2024.
Cheney is the deputy chair of the parliamentary inquiry into the Capitol storming by radical Trump supporters. Only one other member of the Republican Party sits next to her on the panel. Cheney was one of only 10 Republicans to vote to impeach Trump after the Capitol storm. The ex-president repeatedly attacked Cheney because of this. In large parts of the Republican Party, where Trump is still the strongman, the MP is almost ostracized.
In the United States, primaries for the midterm congressional elections in November have been held for months. For the Republicans, the primaries are also an indicator of how great Trump's influence on the conservatives is.
Cheney, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2016, will now lose her seat. In her place, Harriet Hageman will run for a seat in her constituency in arch-conservative Wyoming. During the primary campaign, the 59-year-old adopted Trump's false claims that he only lost the 2020 presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden because of alleged massive election fraud.
