Ukraine reports massive shelling: Russians cover cities with bombs and rockets

During the night, the Russian army continued its artillery fire on Ukrainian cities. Authorities are reporting bomb and rocket attacks in both the north-east and south of the country. Several people are apparently injured and numerous buildings are smashed or burned down.

According to Ukrainian sources, Russian forces continued to bomb cities in Ukraine overnight. More than 150 bombs and grenades were fired at the north-eastern Sumy region, Dmytro Shyvytsky, head of the region's military administration, wrote on Telegram. "They fired mortars, cannon and rocket artillery. The Russians also opened fire with machine guns and mortars."

Mykolaiv was also under fire from cluster projectiles, as the mayor of the southern Ukrainian city, Oleksandr Senkevych, announced on social media. At least two people were injured, windows and roofs of private houses were damaged. In southern Odessa, at least four people were injured in a Russian missile attack and houses were burned down, a spokesman for the regional administration reported on Telegram.

The governor of the Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk, Valentyn Reznichenko, reported on Telegram a massive shelling of the city of Nikopol in the south of the country. The Kyiv Independent quotes him as saying that the city was bombed up to 40 times last night. Two industrial companies were set on fire and residential buildings and power lines were damaged. So far, nothing is known about possible victims. The information cannot be independently verified.

The Ukrainian side said on Monday evening that Russian troops had resumed their attacks in the town of Avdiivka near the city of Donetsk. However, the attacks were repelled, the Ukrainian general staff said in its situation report on Monday. The Russian-backed Donetsk separatists, on the other hand, claimed to have captured the village of Kamyanka. Avdiivka is located in the Donetsk region just a few kilometers north of the city of the same name.

The new attack efforts were preceded by an order from Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. He had called for the attacks in Ukraine to be stepped up in order to reduce the shelling of infrastructure in Russian-occupied Donbass. Donetsk has recently been the target of Ukrainian artillery attacks. It is Moscow's declared goal to wrest the region - like the neighboring Luhansk region before it - completely from Ukrainian control.
