In the southern Russian region of Saratov, according to the authorities, the air defense system shot down a drone near the Engels-2 military airfield. "On the territory of the district, anti-aircraft defense has become active. An unknown object was destroyed," said Governor Roman Busargin in his Telegram channel. There is no danger to the population.
The military airfield, where Russia deploys strategic bombers for missile attacks on Ukraine, was previously attacked twice in December. According to Russian military information, two fighter jets were slightly damaged in the first attack, and three soldiers died in the second attack. The Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on the attacks on Ukraine.
In the morning, the Russian army launched another massive rocket attack on Ukraine and especially on its energy supply infrastructure. To launch such missiles, Russia uses its fleet in the Black and Caspian Seas on the one hand, and strategic bombers, most of which are stationed in Engels, on the other.
The attacks on Engels, more than 500 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, have also sparked speculation about a possible Ukrainian drone strike on Moscow. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the safety of the airspace over the Russian capital. This is the task of the Ministry of Defense, he said when asked by journalists.
