The US is the main supporter of Ukraine in the fight against the Russian aggressor. During her meeting with President Zelensky, the US Treasury Secretary pledged another $10 billion aid package to the war-torn country.
During a visit to Kiev, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen pledged additional financial support of $1.2 billion to Ukraine. This is the first tranche of a total of $10 billion to the Ukrainian government that the US would provide in the coming months, Yellen said after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He thanked Washington for "supporting us not only with arms but also on the financial front since the first days of this war".
The economic support from the USA helps "ensure that the Ukrainian government and important service providers remain functional even under extraordinary circumstances", for example by paying civil servants, firefighters and teachers, said the minister.
The US is Ukraine's main supporter in the war against the invading Russian forces. Last year, US aid for the country amounted to around 50 billion dollars (around 47 billion euros). Last week, US President Joe Biden visited Kiev and pledged the US' "unwavering" support for Ukraine.
During her visit, Yellen emphasized the importance of good governance. Transparency and accountability would become even more important "as Ukraine rebuilds its infrastructure and recovers from the effects of war."
Washington will also press for help from partners like the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Yellen said. "We expect the IMF to set up an ambitious and fully funded program quickly," said the minister. In addition, Washington is relying on improved agreements with its allies to prevent Russia from circumventing western sanctions.
