Volunteer program starts: Britons train thousands of Ukrainians on weapons

Up to 10,000 Ukrainians are in Britain for several weeks. The inexperienced volunteers receive military training intended to turn them into soldiers. The British Ministry of Defense speaks of a "next phase" of support.

Britain has launched a new military training program to train thousands of Ukrainians for the war against Russia. The British Ministry of Defense announced that a first group of up to 10,000 inexperienced volunteers from Ukraine have now completed their first exercises.

The military training, which lasts several weeks, is based on British basic training for soldiers and covers handling weapons, first aid on the battlefield, military tactics and martial law. More than a thousand Britons will take part in the training, which will take place at various military bases around England over the coming months.

"The ambitious new training program marks the next phase of British support for Ukraine's armed forces in their fight against Russian aggression," said Defense Secretary Ben Wallace. With the British Army's "world-class experience," Britain will help Ukraine build up its troops to defend its sovereignty.

As part of "Operation Orbital", Great Britain had already trained around 22,000 Ukrainian soldiers between 2015 and 2022 after the Russian annexation of Crimea. The country also provided Ukraine with £2.3 billion worth of military aid, including more than 5,000 anti-tank weapons and multiple-missile systems.
