Weapons aid for Tehran: Moscow probably wants to deliver fighter jets to Iran

For the war in Ukraine, Russia is also using Iranian kamikaze drones. According to reports, Moscow is now retaliating with the delivery of fighter jets. Tehran could use new military aircraft. The Luftwaffe mainly uses machines from before the Revolution.

Russia is said to be planning to deliver several fighter jets to Iran. This is reported by the Israeli television station i24NEWS, citing Western intelligence sources. According to the report, Russia will deliver 24 Sukhoi-35 fighter jets to Iran, originally manufactured for Egypt. Ultimately, however, the deal with Cairo did not come about due to pressure from the USA. Now Tehran is apparently supposed to serve as a buyer. Iranian pilots should already be trained on the SU-35.

Iran's Air Force does not have modern military aircraft. The majority of fighter jets are American aircraft like the F-4, F-5 from before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

According to the Ukrainian secret service, Russia is said to have ordered 2,400 Shahed-136 kamikaze drones in Iran. Of these, 1,700 are said to have been delivered so far. In return, Tehran is reportedly to receive air defense systems from Moscow. As reported by the AP news agency, the Kremlin is also asking for the delivery of surface-to-surface missiles to replenish its weapon stocks.

Because of mutual support, Jerusalem fears for Israel's ability to continue attacking Iranian targets in Syria. Russia controls Syrian airspace and has so far tolerated Israeli airstrikes.

Iran has so far denied supplying combat drones to Russia after the start of the invasion of Ukraine. The Islamic Republic only made a limited number of drones available to Moscow before the war, Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian said in early November.
