From Bavaria to Spain: US President Biden leaves the G7 summit earlier than planned. Because of bad weather, he skips the morning working session and sets out for Spain, where the NATO summit begins. Before that, however, he meets Scholz again.
According to the White House, US President Joe Biden is leaving the G7 summit in Bavaria earlier than planned due to bad weather. The White House said Biden would therefore not be able to attend a working session scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Before that, however, Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with Biden again. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi also took part in the round of talks ahead of the last working session.
Biden will travel to Madrid after the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau. The NATO summit will take place there on Wednesday and Thursday. Spain's King Felipe invites the alliance's heads of state and government to a gala dinner on Tuesday evening.
The G7 summit started on Sunday. In addition to host Germany, the group of the largest democratic industrial nations includes the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy and Japan. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President Charles Michel also attended the summit. Scholz had also invited five guest countries. The G7 spoke with India, Indonesia, South Africa, Senegal and Argentina on Monday about the climate crisis, energy security and the looming food crisis.
The main topics of the meeting were the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and its consequences, such as the hunger crisis that was threatening worldwide. Over the past few days, the G7 have agreed on further financial, military, humanitarian and diplomatic support for Ukraine. They also announced new sanctions against Russia, including against its defense industry.
The three-day meeting at Schloss Elmau ends with a final statement and a press conference by host Olaf Scholz (live on ntv and ntv.de). Other summit participants will also comment on the conclusion of the summit.
