Weber in "ntv Frühstart": "Orbán must not dance on our noses"

If necessary, EPP parliamentary group leader Weber wants to decide on the oil embargo against Russia without Hungary if Orbán continues to block. It must be possible "to leave the slowest behind," he says in "ntv Frühstart".

The chairman of the EPP group, Manfred Weber (CSU), is pushing for an agreement at the special EU summit to get an oil embargo against Russia off the ground: "It is morally irresponsible that we transfer hundreds of millions to Gazprom every day." Weber sharply criticizes the fact that Hungary is still blocking the embargo: "To be honest, I'm tired of letting Viktor Orbán dictate the speed," said the CSU politician. "If Hungary is not ready to give up the blockade, it must be possible to leave the slowest behind so that the rest of the EU can go ahead."

If necessary, the necessary unanimous decision by the EU states could also be bypassed, according to Weber. The European politician points out that the other EU states could also get involved in intergovernmental solutions if Hungary continues to close. "Orban mustn't step on our noses. If in doubt, the EU countries can also impose an embargo unilaterally," explains Weber.

Due to the ongoing dispute over the oil embargo, the CSU politician is bringing a change in the decision-making structure within the EU into play. According to Weber, the fact that the European Union is dependent on a unanimous result shows that unanimity must be abandoned in the medium term. "Europe must be able to act."

Chancellor Olaf Scholz accuses Weber of allowing himself to be driven by developments during the war: "We are seeing a chancellor who is weak in leadership and who gives Europe no orientation." Germany would not be living up to its responsibility at the moment. "I wish for a more active and committed federal government."

On the other hand, Weber finds words of praise for the agreement between the traffic light and the Union for the special fund for the Bundeswehr. "It's a strong sign that Germany is now ready to invest in defense," says the EPP parliamentary group leader, but he also warns that we shouldn't lose sight of Europe now. "The national investments are right and necessary. But we would save money and be more efficient if we made some areas European," says Weber. "We need a European pillar of defense."
