Bundesliga: Next top performer: Gladbach extended with Hofmann

Borussia Mönchengladbach has extended the contract with the next top performer and tied Jonas Hofmann to the club until 2025.

The international, who has been playing in the Lower Rhine region since January 2016, has extended his contract, which expires next summer, by two years, including an option for a further year. The Frenchman Alassane Plea had only given his commitment for two more years in Mönchengladbach on Friday. The Bundesliga club has thus prevented free transfers next summer for two of the five regular players whose contracts expire at the end of the season.

Hofmann has matured into a leader

"In his six and a half years with us, Jonas has become one of the faces of our team. He has made an impressive development here - first as a regular player and leading player with us and now also as a permanent fixture in the German national team," said Borussia sporting director Roland Virkus on Monday. Hofmann came from Borussia Dortmund for around eight million euros in 2016 and has scored 36 goals in 182 competitive games for Gladbach. The 30-year-old, who can play both defensively and offensively, has made 14 appearances with four goals in the national team. Hofmann is also a solid candidate for the World Cup squad.

In Yann Sommer, Ramy Bensebaini and Marcus Thuram there are still three players with expiring contracts in the squad. Especially with goalkeeper Sommer, who also has an offer, the club hopes for another commitment.
