Euroleague start badly screwed up: Fenerbahce frustrates Bayern's basketball giants

After a successful start in the Bundesliga, the basketball players from Bayern Munich suffered a severe setback at the start of the Euroleague. Against the Turkish champions Fenerbahce Istanbul, the team of coach Andrea Trinchieri is clearly defeated in their own hall.

The FC Bayern Munich basketball team lost their first game of the season in the Euroleague. On Thursday evening, the German runners-up lost 62:74 (34:40) against the top Turkish club and co-favourites Fenerbahçe Istanbul. Not once was the Bundesliga basketball team in the lead.

The hosts struggled offensively: four of the first five attacks ended in a loss of possession, and it quickly became 0:7. After that it didn't get much better. After six minutes, Munich had only scored six points. A meager yield. But the bench players brought Bayern back. The guests from Istanbul had advantages near the basket, gained up to 13 points in the second quarter and were 40:34 ahead at the break. The game of Munich remained disorganized.

The two top scorers Othello Hunter (18 points) and Nick Weiler-Babb (12) brought Bayern back up to 44:48 in the third quarter, but Fenerbahçe then pulled away again. Munich remained without points for more than four minutes. The guests continued to control the game in the final section, three minutes before the end of the game they had pulled away by 20 points. Nigerian Tonye Jekiri (15), Greek international Nick Calathes (12) and US boy Nigel Hayes-Davis (11) scored best for Fenerbahce.

On Friday, double winner Alba Berlin will be the second German team in the Euroleague to enter the competition. The reigning German champions then receive the Serbian record champions Partizan Belgrade.
