From demoted to exempt: HSV throws sports director Mutzel out

Sporting director Mutzel has recently had a difficult time at Hamburger SV and is not allowed to speak to either the team or the public. Now the dismantling is apparently complete: Mutzel should leave the second division soccer team.

According to information from "Kicker", Hamburger SV is now parting ways with sports director Michael Mutzel shortly before the start of the season in the 2nd Bundesliga. The 42-year-old was released, the magazine reported in the evening. HSV, who narrowly lost to Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga relegation, will start the new season on Sunday with an away game at Eintracht Braunschweig. Since the beginning of the week, Mutzel's release has been promoted, it is said.

According to media reports, the 42-year-old had already been demoted and was only tasked with planning the squad. He should therefore no longer have any contact with the team and the coaching team, but only take care of transfers. His contract was valid until 2023, if it is terminated prematurely, Mutzel should receive a severance payment.

In the final phase of last season, tensions between HSV sports director Jonas Boldt and Mutzel are said to have arisen. After a rumored crisis talk between the two, the club had not officially commented. Mutzel came from TSG Hoffenheim in 2019, where he was chief scout for three years.
