Fully vaccinated is not enough: Corona virus is fatal to Gündoğan in the USA

Early in the pandemic, the national player Ilkay Gündogan caught the coronavirus, who has been warning of the consequences ever since and has been fully vaccinated in Germany. Different rules apply in the USA, but an infection prevents further vaccination. Now the US is refusing him entry.

İlkay Gündoğan is missing from Manchester City's 26-man squad for the pre-season trip to the United States. The new club of top striker Erling Haaland did not provide any information on its website as to why the German national soccer player was not or could not be considered by coach Pep Guardiola. According to a report by The Athletic magazine, Gündoğan cannot come to the USA because of the corona entry regulations.

Gündoğan has already been infected twice with the corona virus. For the first time in September 2020. "I had pretty much all the symptoms. Starting with a fever, a sore throat, loss of taste. I had felt worse than ever before," the 31-year-old had once reported afterwards. He then had himself vaccinated once last summer and was therefore considered fully vaccinated in Germany.

A second vaccination for the trip to the USA should follow this summer. In June, however, he tested positive for the virus again, and the doctors then advised against further vaccination before three months after the first negative result, reported "The Athletic". However, entry into the USA is not possible with this. According to the magazine report, Gündoğan is now set to travel from Manchester to Croatia with the U23s on Sunday.

England internationals John Stones and Phil Foden will also be there. The magazine gave no further reason for the duo's absence, only briefly saying that they do not report on people's medical records or vaccination status without permission. Manchester City also meets the German record champions Bayern Munich during the USA tour. The game will be played next Saturday at the Green Bay Packers' home ground, the legendary Lambeau Field.

Gündoğan is not the first player from the English Premier League to be refused entry. N'Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek from Thomas Tuchel Club Chelsea were also not allowed to start their journey across the pond.
