Liverpool wins Supercup: Haaland has to cede first title to Klopp

Haaland's first competitive game for his new employer ends in bankruptcy. In the English Supercup, champions Manchester City are at a disadvantage against Liverpool. The former BVB star left a total of three opportunities unused.

Liverpool FC has won the first title of the new football season in England. In the duel for the Supercup - the so-called Community Shield - the FA Cup winners defeated champions Manchester City 3-1 (1-0). Trent Alexander-Arnold initially gave Liverpool the lead (21'), Julian Alvarez equalized (70'). Mohamed Salah with a penalty in the 83rd minute and new signing Darwin Núñez in stoppage time made for a fair success in an intense game.

Because of the women's football European Championship final between England and Germany tomorrow, Sunday, at London's Wembley Stadium, the game for the English Super Cup did not take place there this time, but at the stadium of last year's winners, Leicester City.

The Liverpool team coached by Jürgen Klopp got into the game better than the City team coached by Pep Guardiola. Salah had the first opportunity in the third minute with a shot at the side netting. Alexander-Arnold then hit the inside post with a flick from the edge of the penalty area to make it 1-0.

Erling Haaland, who was signed from Dortmund, did not come into play at Manchester because City could hardly find their way onto the offensive. In the 34th minute, the goalscorer from Norway had two chances within a few seconds, but he couldn't take them.

New signing Darwin Núñez, who had just come on as a substitute, missed the great opportunity to make it 2-0 for Liverpool. The 22-year-old, who came from Benfica, shot goalkeeper Ederson who had run out in the 64th minute. Alvarez equalized a little later, after which Guardiola brought on German international İlkay Gündoğan. But the decisive factor came from Salah with a penalty from video evidence and Núñez (90.4) with a header. Haaland missed another big chance in injury time.
