He called it "a very close experience to death." Alonso stated that the accident would not affect his ability to play and that he is "just really grateful to be alive."
Alonso claimed that he was driving to spring-training when another driver ran red lights and t-boned his car. His car was said to have flipped "probably three times".
The first baseman stated, "I'm just really grateful to be alive, and I'm really thankful for my health." I was just coming to work and going to spring training. The next thing I know, I'm trying to kick my windshield to escape a flipped car.
CBS Sports reported Alonso's wife Haley was behind him in a different car and could call 911 immediately after seeing the accident.
Haley uploaded a video on Instagram showing the aftermath of the accident. She wrote that she was "terrified" about what she would see after approaching her husband's car following the crash.
"I couldn’t see inside the truck because my windshield was broken. "I screamed for my husband in the hope that he would be able to reply," she wrote. He said that he was fine and would kick the windshield out to escape.
Alonso claimed that her husband had "only one scratch on his arm" when he was able get out of the car. He called it a "miracle."
"I felt like I was watching my husband die before me, and that is something I will never forget." She wrote that this could have easily turned out differently, which is what's so frightening.
CBS Sports reported that Alonso was able participate in spring training Monday. He led the Mets in hits and home runs last season. He broke the major league record of 53 home runs for a rookie in 2019.
