After a deadlock in the first quarter, goals by Alexis Vega and Sebastian Cordova, Uriel Anuna, Eduardo Aguirre gave Mexico the perfect start to their Olympic journey.

France was without its most prominent stars following Euro 2020. However, Andre-Pierre Gignac scored a goal, and must now get up after suffering humiliating defeats in the opening game of Group A.

In Group C, Spain was held to an indifferent draw by Egypt despite having a wide range of attacking talents.

Spain included Euro 2020 team members that reached the semifinals, unlike many other teams at the Olympics. Pedri, a teenage sensation, and Dani Olmo, RB Leipzig's star, are among them.

It couldn't get past an obstinate Egyptian defense.

In other matches, New Zealand defeated South Korea 1-0 to win Group B early and Ivory Coast beat Saudi Arabia 2:2.
