More family and less football: death leads Carlos Tevez to the end of his career

His career began at Boca Juniors and it is also Carlos Tevez's last club. More than a year after his last game, the striker announces his departure. The reason is tragic, because the death of his "number one fan" is too heavy.

Carlos Tevez has declared his football career over. The 38-year-old brawny and always combative Argentinian hasn't played for a year, most recently he was under contract with Boca Juniors in the Argentine capital. Tevez, who belongs to the generation around superstar Lionel Messi, gave a very personal reason for his resignation. "I'm quitting football because I lost my number one fan," said the forward. What is meant is his stepfather, he died in February 2021 as a result of a corona infection.

"As a player, I gave everything, everything that was in my heart," Tevez said on America TV's Animales Sueltos talk show. He had offers from the USA, also from Argentina, but in the future he mainly wants to spend time with his own family. But the full-blooded attacker can't get away from football, he wants to get started as a coach, and he's working on a project with his brothers.

Tevez has over 70 caps for Argentina and has scored 13 goals. He has twice been voted Footballer of the Year in his home country, once in Brazil, where he also won the championship with Corinthians São Paulo, and once in Italy, where he even won the title twice with Juventus Turin. Tevez's achievements include five championships with Boca, two Premier League titles with Manchester United and one with Manchester City, as well as the Champions League win with United in 2008. His first stop in Europe was West Ham United. In 2017 he also played briefly for Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super League, which at the time attracted many international (old) stars with large salaries.

He also became Olympic champion with Argentina in 2004, at the Copa América he took second place three times: in 2004, 2007 and 2014. The Messi generation had long been accused of not having a title, only in 2021 after four final defeats in a row did they win their first title in almost 30 years years - albeit without Tevez, who also missed the 2014 World Cup, where Argentina lost 1-0 in extra time to Germany in the final. Back home, Tevez is nicknamed "El Apache" because of his origins in an area known as "Fort Apache."
