NFL: Lewis Hamilton joins Denver Broncos

Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton enters the football business. The seven-time world champion will become a co-owner of the NFL team Denver Broncos, the owners announced.

"This is a unique opportunity to make an impact on the sport and work with a world-class team," the 37-year-old wrote on Instagram. He wants to "serve as an example of the value of more diverse leadership across sport," added the Brit.

The Broncos were recently taken over by a group of investors led by billionaire Rob Walton, son of Walmart founder Sam Walton. The billion-dollar deal is considered one of the most expensive in the history of sport. The owners now welcomed the partnership with Hamilton. The racing driver is "a champion who knows how to lead a winning team and a great advocate of global equality," the statement said.

A group of investors led by Hamilton had recently failed when attempting to take over Chelsea FC. In addition to a charitable foundation, the Mercedes driver also has shares in a restaurant chain.
