Official Rose successor: successful coach Terzic is back at BVB

Now it's official too. Edin Terzic is the new coach of Borussia Dortmund. He succeeds his own successor. With the 39-year-old, BVB hopes to return to the old days.

Edin Terzic is now officially the new coach of Borussia Dortmund. The 39-year-old succeeds Marco Rose, his successor on the bench in the Westfalenstadion. Terzic had already trained the runner-up from December 2020 to June 2021.

"We had several intensive talks with Edin Terzic last weekend and are convinced that this personnel decision is the right one for BVB," said the designated sports director Sebastian Kehl in the club's announcement: "Edin knows our club, the environment, one A large part of the team and knows what adjustments we want to make in order to be able to offer our fans successful football. The 2022/23 season is all about a new start in sport."

The following statements are made by Edin Terzic: "By now many people should be aware of the special importance of BVB in my life. I would therefore like to thank Aki Watzke, Michael Zorc and Sebastian Kehl for the great trust and the transfer of this great responsibility." The coaching team around Terzic should be put together in the next few days.

Borussia Dortmund surprisingly parted ways with Marco Rose on Friday after just one season. The 45-year-old switched from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Borsigplatz in the summer of 2021 for a transfer fee of five million euros and replaced Edin Terzic. Rose was the sixth BVB coach after Jürgen Klopp left in the summer of 2015. Thomas Tuchel, Peter Bosz, Peter Stöger, Lucien Favre and Terzic had previously tried to breathe new euphoria into BVB. They had seldom succeeded - not even Rose in the end.

The flood of goals conceded in the league, in the end there were 52 and another 21 in the cup competitions, a disastrous campaign in the Champions League, relegation to the play-offs of the Europa League with the elimination against eventual finalists Glasgow Rangers and a debacle in the DFB -Pokal at second division FC St. Pauli had sown doubts about Rose. They were only strengthened when BVB finally gambled away their championship chances in two games in Cologne and at home against Leipzig at the end of March and beginning of April.

So there was a long season analysis in Dortmund on Thursday. In addition to Rose, BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, club advisor Matthias Sammer and outgoing sports director Michael Zorc and his successor Sebastian Kehl were also there. At the end of the analysis, Rose had asked the question of trust and demanded "loyalty to the Nibelungs" from BVB, can be heard from Dortmund. The answer to that was separation.

The 45-year-old also had the sporting leadership of the club during the session. The Bundesliga club can now - unlike in the summer of 2019, when Favre was allowed to continue after missing the championship and was fired a few months later - without a possible coaching discussion in the new season. The new sports director Kehl will not have to dismiss a coach as a possible first official act. With Terzic comes a confidante who spent the last season waiting in the stands.

BVB fan Terzic stepped in as interim coach in December 2020 after separating from Lucien Favre. He had heaved the club into the Champions League with a furious final sprint with seven wins from the last seven games. But in addition to the mandatory task, he also managed a coup by winning the DFB Cup. For the first time since Jürgen Klopp left in 2015, success and the coach were able to unite the club in the midst of the pandemic and without any spectators. The Sauerland had earned a reputation as a man-catcher.

Terzic stepped down to the second tier with the arrival of Rose and took over the newly created post of technical director. During the course of the season he turned down requests from other Bundesliga clubs, but this summer he wanted to return to the coaching bench. Either with BVB or another club. It is said that he had received inquiries from numerous Bundesliga clubs. With this information, the club went into the decisive meeting with Rose. BVB would have lost its shadow man and might have had to commit to an emergency solution in the middle of the season.

With the internationals Niklas Süle, Karim Adeyemi and Nico Schlotterbeck, BVB has already signed three new professionals. Cologne's Salih Öczan should come for the sixth position, BVB Ajax star Sebastien Haller hopes to sign up in the storm. As technical director, Terzic was already involved in squad planning. In Dortmund they do not assume that the change of coach will cause problems for the players who have already signed up.

Numerous current professionals are said to be leaving BVB. Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard and Nico Schulz are among the sales candidates and could follow the departures of Erling Haaland, Roman Bürki, Marwin Hitz, Dan-Axel Zagadou, Axel Witsel, Marcel Schmelzer, Reinier and Marin Pongracic. The always nervous BVB is once again facing a season of upheaval, which should also be accompanied by Peter Hermann on the sidelines. BVB has not yet officially confirmed this personality.

The 70-year-old had last worked as an assistant coach at Schalke 04, was also successful at Bayern Munich with Jupp Heynckes and should support Terzic with his experience. He currently has a contract with the German Football Association as an assistant coach for the U20 juniors, but was released there to help out the Royal Blues as assistant coach to interim coach Mike Büskens.
