Olympic champion Lisa Brennauer ended her cycling career after the European Championships in Munich. With a total of seven world championship titles and the gold medal in the track four, the 34-year-old is one of the most successful athletes in German cycling.
"It's the right time," Brennauer told the German Press Agency. "I think it's nice that I can leave the sport with this positive energy and that I was able to choose the time myself and wasn't forced to."
Brennauer resigns at the peak of her career. In addition to Olympic gold, the 2021 Allgäu native also won European and World Championship gold in the individual and team pursuit, as well as the World Championship title in mixed on the road. The German women's foursome with Brennauer, Lisa Klein, Franziska Brauße and Mieke Kröger was also named Team of the Year in Baden-Baden. In Munich, Germany's cyclist of the year starts both on the road and on the track. "I'll take everything with me there again," she said.
After her career, Brennauer is still employed as a professional soldier in the German Armed Forces and would like to stay close to sports. "I hope to get the opportunity to pass on a lot of my knowledge and experience," she said. A role as a trainer is also conceivable.
