Porsche flirts with Red Bull: Formula 1 dream marriage is about to take place

Red Bull's Formula 1 home game in Spielberg is probably too early for the big announcement - but hardly anyone doubts that the team will have a future together with Porsche. The possible entry of Porsche is a “really exciting” moment for the racing series, Red Bull is already enthusiastic.

It's not like Porsche doesn't play a role at all this weekend in Spielberg. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the track is even packed with the racing cars from Zuffenhausen - when the Supercup starts. A one-make cup in the supporting program of Formula 1, it's nothing more than a supporting role. Actually, it should have been a main role. Red Bull wanted to announce the new dream marriage with Porsche just in time for the home game in Austria. No one really doubts that this will happen.

Only the big stage in Spielberg is still a bit too early. The regulations for 2026 have still not been approved. The Formula 1 Commission met again on Friday, but the World Council of the FIA still has to agree afterwards. And so the big contenders from Germany are still keeping a low profile - in addition to Porsche, Audi is also interested. While the Ingolstadt-based company has been speculating about various models for months, Porsche has always been all about Red Bull. And the racing team, which once dominated Formula 1 and is now the world champion again, liked this role.

The possible entry of Porsche is a "really exciting" moment for the racing series, said team boss Christian Horner, without confirming a close agreement. However, Red Bull's motorsport consultant Helmut Marko stated that only his team would come into question for such a brand anyway. "As far as the future is concerned, I think we are the most attractive bride in Formula 1," he told the Kleine Zeitung a while ago. What the 79-year-old means: World champion Max Verstappen has a contract until 2028, so the newcomer could plan with one of the most popular drivers. And in Milton Keynes, the state-of-the-art engine department Red Bull Powertrains has just been completed, the infrastructure is ready.

At Porsche, too, people are no longer particularly cautious when it comes to Formula 1 plans. The premier class is playing "in a league with the Olympic Games or the World Cup," CEO Oliver Blume recently told the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung". It is quite remarkable that two large manufacturers now want to get involved. A few years ago it seemed that Formula 1 could soon become obsolete. The combustion engine had long had an image problem, and Formula E was becoming more and more interesting for the big brands.

However, many of them have already turned away again, it was only a short high for the electric racing series. Also because Formula 1 was able to convince the manufacturers of their idea for the future: From 2026, half of the driving force should be generated electrically, and the combustion engine should also run on “completely sustainable” fuel. The significantly simpler engines should then bring more relevance for series production again, the racing series would be an attractive advertising platform. There's no lack of attention anyway - you can't get more spectators in motorsport than in Formula 1.
