Schult without a new contract: national goalkeeper leaves the superstars club

Almuth Schult announces her departure from top German club VfL Wolfsburg in January, she will play for Angel City FC from the summer - and now she has to think about the next career option: The national goalkeeper will no longer play for the Hollywood stars' club.

Soccer goalkeeper Almuth Schult is leaving Angel City FC from the US professional league NWSL after less than a season. As the club announced, the 31-year-old's contract had not been renewed. After the European Championships this summer, where she did not play, Schult switched from doubles winner VfL Wolfsburg to the USA in the middle of the NWSL season. Schult played one game for the California club.

The keeper recently told the SID that she was "reviewing the last few months": "I'm no longer just a competitive athlete on my own, I have a family and we have to find the best way for the children too." Schult became the mother of twins in December 2020 - and thus became the first and only mother in the Bundesliga. The American league is "very interesting". Even though she didn't play that much, "I really enjoyed the time, got to know new perspectives and a different football culture."

Angel City FC is a special club: Hollywood stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Garner and Eva Longoria are among the founders, as well as tennis superstar Serena Williams, skiing legend Lindsey Vonn and former US internationals Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach the organization. The club reportedly sold 16,000 season tickets for its first season.

Schult had revealed to the "Wolfsburger Allgemeine" before she left for Los Angeles: "It's not just about football, it's also about impact - and about supporting women. I'm proud to be part of the team and I'm happy to go join summer." Now Schult's USA adventure is quickly coming to an end.

Schult is not aiming to return to the Bundesliga for the time being: "I know the Bundesliga inside out. If I had wanted to continue playing in the Bundesliga, I would have stayed," Schult said of her conscious decision in the summer to try something new: "I was in great conditions at the best club in Germany." After her farewell announcement in January, there was also speculation about Schult's career end. At the men's World Cup, Schult will soon act again as an ARD expert.
