Subscription becomes a luxury: DAZN causes an uproar with a drastic price increase

In January, DAZN caused a stir with a price increase for new customers. Even then, the streaming service also announced adjustments for existing customers. They will be announced on July 1st. The prices double.

The Internet sports broadcaster DAZN is also significantly increasing its prices for existing customers. From this Friday, the paid streaming service will send corresponding messages to those customers who currently have a cheaper subscription. DAZN had already received a lot of criticism in January when it drastically increased the costs for new customers. Now the same applies to old customers: the costs for a monthly subscription have practically doubled, rising from EUR 14.99 to EUR 29.99. The cheapest contract for one year costs 274.99 instead of 149.99 euros. There was initially no comment on this.

The increase in price is due to the expansion course of the online broadcaster. DAZN had recently invested massively and outperformed competitors in bidding for the media rights of the German Football League and UEFA. To justify the enormous price increase, it was said in January: "The sports platform is doing justice to the quality and value of its range, which has been greatly expanded since the start of the season, and is positioning itself in the market structure with a reasonable price."

Also this season, the streaming provider can show Bundesliga games live on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. In addition, almost all matches of the Champions League with the five German teams are on offer. DAZN has been active in Germany since August 2016. Initially, the monthly subscription cost 9.99 euros. Most recently, the Internet sports broadcaster had increased the price from 11.99 to 14.99 euros for the 2021/22 season. According to the pay provider, the package includes 8,000 live sports events per year in Germany.

In addition to DAZN, the fan of a Bundesliga team also needs a Sky subscription. This is the only way to watch all the games of your own team live. Additional costs continue to arise for the Champions League, parts of which are broadcast by the internet generalist Amazon. All games of the German teams in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League can be seen on RTL. However, selected games will also be broadcast on free TV.
