A Ferrari of racing legend Michael Schumacher has been auctioned in Switzerland for a record price. The new owner shelled out 13 million francs (almost 13.2 million euros) for the red car. Schumacher became world champion in the car in 2003. According to auction house Sotheby's, which sold the F2003-GA in Geneva, this is the highest hammer price ever achieved for a modern Formula 1 racing car. Schumacher won five races with the 229 chassis in 2003 and secured the sixth of his seven world championship titles.
The car had a longer wheelbase compared to the previous model and an engine with improved weight distribution. Manufacturer Ferrari thus won the fifth constructors' world championship title in a row. The racing car was overhauled by the Italian carmaker this year. "It's roadworthy if you dare and if you fit in," said one auctioneer.
The price achieved was well above expectations: Sotheby's had estimated the value of the red car, with which Schumacher became world champion in 2003, at 7.5 to 9.5 million francs. In August, Schumacher's 1998 Ferrari F300 was sold for $6.22 million (€6.2 million) by RM Sotheby's. The car auction house, part-owned by Sotheby's, was also involved in the Geneva auction.
