The Chicago Tribune sports section won the "Grand Slam" in the 2016 Associated Press Sports Editors contest, placing among the top 10 in the country in all four judging categories.
Tribune baseball columnist Paul Sullivan also made the top 10 in project writing for "The Weight," a season-long series chronicling the Cubs' quest to end their historic World Series drought. The North Siders' first championship since 1908 dominated Tribune headlines and coverage last year.
Competing in the largest publication category — newspapers with a circulation of more than 175,000 — the Tribune was judged among the best in the country in daily, Sunday and special sections. The Tribune also took top-10 honors in the sports-digital contest among organizations with a print circulation of more than 175,000 or more than 2 million unique monthly visitors.
The Dallas Morning News, Minneapolis Star Tribune and Washington Post were the only other large publications to win Grand Slam honors. Judging ends Sunday.
