Watzke announces Haller replacement: Will Cavani or Depay teach FCB to fear?

Who will be Borussia Dortmund's new super striker? Haaland is gone, Haller is ill, but BVB wants to quickly step up the offensive. This is announced by Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke. There are some exciting names circulating, but the Dortmunders are probably tight on cash.

Erling Haaland is gone. The miracle striker, perhaps the only striker of the past two years in the Bundesliga, who really scared Bayern and their fans. Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund then signed Sébastien Haller to scare Munich again. But after his testicular cancer, BVB had to sign another goalscorer. This should now happen as soon as possible.

"Now dumping everything on Youssoufa Moukoko's shoulders - he is 17 years old - that might be a bit much," said managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke in an interview with "sportschau.de" and added: "Well, I think so, that we'll do something again in terms of personnel."

Newcomer Haller will be out for months. Sports director Sebastian Kehl recently left open whether BVB would sign another striker. "Ideally, something should happen in the next eight to ten days," said Watzke, but he restricted: "Although a really good solution is also difficult because the offer on the market is not exactly lavish." Overall, Dortmund reportedly don't want to put their hands on more than €10m (total package).

As the “Sportbild” found out, BVB is said to have been offered several strikers. Including Edinson Cavani. The 35-year-old Uruguayan striker is currently without a club and would be available quickly. But how fit Cavani is and what level he can still reach remains questionable. His best days, in which he scored for Manchester United, PSG and Napoli, among others, are more likely to be over. Nevertheless, according to the report, there has already been contact and further talks are planned. However, the striker is unlikely to be cheap despite no fee being due (salary and, if applicable, earnest money) and is probably also on the list at Villareal.

While Cavani could replace Haller, who is 1.90 meters tall as a penalty area striker almost one-to-one, at least due to his position, another name is now making the rounds: Memphis Depay, as the Spanish newspaper "Sport" reports. The attacker from FC Barcelona is more variable in the sixteen and not a classic nine, but at 28 years of age he is significantly younger than Cavani and may also be available on a free transfer. Allegedly, the Catalans and Depay are working on a contract termination because the Dutchman's sale didn't materialize. At BVB, the striker could put up a dangerous offensive together with Donyell Malen, who is also from the Netherlands.

In addition to the two stars from abroad, Anthony Modeste from FC Köln is also being traded. There is said to have been contact here too and the Effzeh fan favorite would certainly be in a lower class in terms of salary compared to Cavani and Depay. Edin Dzeko, the former Wolfsburg champion striker, will probably not be the new BVB attacker. According to "Ruhr Nachrichten", the traded Arkadiusz Milik, Krzystof Piatek or Jhon Cordoba are no longer part of the narrower group of candidates.

Vice-champion Dortmund starts the season against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday (6.30 p.m. / Sky). Probably without a newcomer for the time being. The embarrassment of the Werkself in the cup at third division SV Elversberg (3-4) no longer matters to Watzke: "It doesn't matter for the game on Saturday." BVB wants to attack the serial champions Bayern Munich this season - but it needs a striker who teaches the record champions to fear.
