After the game against VfB Stuttgart, FC Bayern Munich is back at the top of the table. But already on Sunday they can drop to third place. After three games without a win and before the Champions League classic against Barcelona, Thomas Müller does not hold back his words. He is angry.
Bayern Munich can no longer win in the Bundesliga. After the two 1-1 draws against Borussia Mönchengladbach and Union Berlin, the record champions followed up with a 2-2 draw against VfB Stuttgart. With only twelve points from the first six league games of this season, coach Julian Nagelsmann's team is currently at the top of the table, but can still be overtaken by Freiburg and Union on Sunday.
Bayern Munich took the lead twice against Stuttgart, who are more in the second half of the table in the Bundesliga, but in the end the points were shared again. The Swabians answered the goals of the two teenagers Mathys Tel (36th) and Jamal Musiala (60th) once confidently and once late. VfB newcomer Serhou Guirassy made it 2-2 late in the second minute of injury time after a penalty won according to video evidence.
Enough for national player Thomas Müller to issue a clear warning to his teammates. "In the end it doesn't matter what the referee called or didn't call. Today for the first time this season I'm angry with ourselves. We have to understand that if we want to win we'll go to the end," said Raumdeuter at Sky and followed up: "If we want to get to the top of the table as quickly as possible, and that's our claim - at least that's what we say - then we have to take a look at our own noses, every single one."
Müller, who will meet his former dream partner in attack, Robert Lewandowski, against Barcelona on Tuesday, remained angry. Today, he said, he has "a really nice tie", also because he had the feeling "that we gave something here."
It is not yet threatening for Bayern, who are still unbeaten but have not been victorious for a long time. The big competitors from Dortmund, Leipzig and Leverkusen are not stable, the other clubs around TSG Hoffenheim, SC Freiburg and Union Berlin do not have the squad in the long run to stop Munich in the race for the title. Nevertheless, the draw resulted in a remarkable fact: It's been a long time since Bayern started a season with such problems.
The twelve points from the first six games mean Bayern's worst start to the season since the 2010/2011 season. Back then, Bayern only collected eight points from their first six games, losing under coach Louis van Gaal at 1. FC Kaiserslautern and at home to 1. FSV Mainz. At the end of the season, van Gaal was history and Bayern weren't even runners-up.
In the following years Bayern collected 15, 18, 16, 14, 18, 16, 13, 13, 14, 15 and 16 points. Only in the 2011/2012 season were they unable to lift the championship trophy at the end of the season.
