It wasn't until drivers saw a splash from the San Antonio River that they knew something had gone wrong.
Ebenezer Oloba, 23, and Oscar Fuentes, 19, were headed north on U.S. Highway 77 around 2 p.m. Saturday when their dark gray Chevrolet Cruze left the roadway and landed into the river.
Nathan Brandley, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman, said Oloba and Fuentes were pulled from the vehicle Sunday after a dive team was able to locate the car and have it pulled from the water. Oloba and Fuentes were pronounced dead at the scene.

Although the cause of death for each is remaining, Brandley said the pair likely drowned. DPS Rangers are investigating what exactly went wrong. Brandley said the car went off the road for "unknown reasons" and there were no witnesses to the accident.
"A couple of vehicles saw the splash and the water come up over the road," he said, adding that it caused drivers to stop.
Oloba and Fuentes were students at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, officials said on their Facebook page. University officials said the pair were traveling to College Station to attend the Conference on Student Government Associations when the crash occurred.

The university's student government association is planning a vigil for 8 p.m. Tuesday.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Ebenezer 'Tosin' and Oscar," they said.
Fuentes was from Kingsville and Oloba was from Snellville, Georgia, Brandley said.
