If protests are any indication, Vancouver isn’t all too excited about its newest landmark – a 63-story Trump tower. Here’s what you should know about the newest Trump-branded tower.

It’s not cheap. The average two-bedroom condo in the tower went for $1.7 million when sales opened, and the price appears to have gone up since.

Donald Jr. tried to crack a funny during the opening, according to Vancouver Sun’s Denise Ryan. It went something like, “I'd like to the thank the press. No, just kidding says Donald Trump Junior.”

The Vancouver Sun’s Denise Ryan noted that a glass fence separates the tower’s bar from its pool. Drinking and swimming don’t go together in Vancouver.

The Vancouver Trump tower isn’t actually 69 stories – it’s 63. A publicist for the venture claims to have counted the tower’s underground parking levels, but CBC notes that Vancouver city code doesn’t allow builders to count underground levels.

Some interesting counting was involved to put the penthouse on floor 69. Here’s how CBC explains it: “Its developers skipped floor 13, and each floor ending in four (4, 14, 24, and so on), following a practice that is not uncommon in Vancouver. The word 'four' in Cantonese sounds like words and phrases involving death.”

Vancouver city leaders tried to get the name pulled as early as 2015. According to The Globe and Mail, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson told the project developer the Trump name was a blight on the city’s skyline. Robertson is pictured above waving the Olympic flag.

While Donald Trump is far, far, far from being the first U.S. president to have a building named after him, he’s certainly the best paid for the honor.

President Trump made much of his still-undisclosed fortune selling his name. The Trump brand is something of a reverse franchise – others build their business and then pay the Trump Organization to put his name on them.

Vancouver’s Trump International Hotel and Tower officially opened Tuesday following a visit from the president’s sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. Their continued involvement in their father’s business has been something of a trouble spot for the Donald, whose critics have noted that those who want to influence the president may cut deals with his sons.

The Trump name’s worth in British Columbia is something of an unanswered question. Speaking with the Vancouver Sun recently, Simon Fraser University Professor Lindsay Meredith opined that “any CEO better give his head a shake if he thinks he can get away with doing or saying absolutely anything and that there’s not going to be repercussions for either the corporation or the many brands that it encompasses.”

But the Trump brand didn’t hurt sales – the price per square foot is apparently the highest in Canada.

“It is hard to imagine the value of any of the spectacular residential units ever going down because of the tarnished Trump stamp,” The Globe and Mail’s Gary Mason recently said in a column. “It is Vancouver after all.”

Protestors greeted the brothers Trump and their Malaysian benefactor – tower owner Tony Tiah – as they headed in for a ribbon cutting. Check out the gallery above for a look at some of the stranger bits about the tower.
