Trinity Christian School in Lubbock canceled classes Feb. 9-10 "due to the extreme number of children out due to illness," at its elementary school.

A 1-year-old in South Texas died earlier this month due to the flu, the first pediatric death from the virus this year, officials confirmed Friday.

The child, who lived in the Rio Grande Valley, died between Feb. 5 and Feb. 11, according to the Department of State Health Services website. It is unclear if the baby was vaccinated for this season's influenza.

Last year, seven pediatric deaths were reported, according to a news release. 

Across Texas this month, at least nine school districts have closed for one or more days due to a flu or illness outbreak. Near San Antonio, Hunt ISD shut down its lone campus Feb. 7-8 after more than 50 students were out sick.

In Bexar County, flu activity has been increasing.

A Metro Health news release from February detailed the rise in those infected, saying: "the percentage of specimens testing positive for influenza reported by hospital, public health laboratories and patient visits due to influenza-like illness slightly increased."

Medina ISD, located northwest of San Antonio, closed its campuses Feb. 10 and Feb. 13 after at least 15 students were out sick with the flu.
