Ivan Alfonso Sosa Aquinaga, 23, was arrested Thursday evening and charged the same day with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree kidnapping for holding his girlfriend against her well.
Federal Way police and King County prosecutors believe Sosa Aquinaga set out to kill his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend after the ex-boyfriend texted her at a family birthday party early Sunday morning. The texts prompted Sosa Aquinaga to place the barrel of a revolver against his girlfriend's ribs and demand to know where her ex lived or he would kill her and her family, court records say.
Sosa Aquinaga also reportedly took control of his girlfriend's cell phone and called and texted the ex-boyfriend several times.
The girlfriend tried to deny knowing where her ex-boyfriend lived, but Sosa Aquinaga allegedly drove her in her truck to her mother's house and threatened to kill her family, police reports say.
The woman finally complied with his demands and directed him to the apartment complex in the 1900 block of Southwest Campus Drive, fearful for her family's lives, court documents indicate. She told Sosa Aquinaga her ex-boyfriend drove a white Toyota Camry.
Meanwhile, the ex-boyfriend told authorities that he received texts from his ex-girlfriend's phone reading, "I am coming over to your house" and "I am going to kill you and your family and everyone who is inside."
The pair found the white Camry parked in front of the ex-boyfriend's building and Sosa Aquinaga reportedly parked his girlfriend's truck around the corner. It appeared the vehicle was occupied. Shortly before 2 a.m., Sosa Aquinaga allegedly stood behind the Camry and fired five to six shots in the vehicle and took off in the truck, driving recklessly back to the home they shared in Kent, according to police. He packed a bag of personal belongings and the pair took off in the woman's truck.
She pleaded with Sosa Aquinaga to turn himself in, but he allegedly continued to threaten her with his gun and drove the truck to Sunnyside, Wash., where he dropped her off and left with her truck and cell phone.
The man in the car was the ex-boyfriend's father, who was shot in the heart and liver, reports say. Medics arrived after 911 calls reporting a shooting and found the man in the front seat of the car, unconscious and covered in a blanket. The car sustained about five gunshots and witnesses said they saw a truck matching the description of the woman's truck taking off from the complex at the time of the shooting, according to police.
Medics performed CPR on the man and rushed him to Harborview Medical Center.
The woman called authorities Monday to report what happened to her and her ex-boyfriend's father. Police found her truck late Tuesday in Moses Lake.
Police learned through an anonymous tip Wednesday night that Sosa Aquinaga was reportedly hiding in a barn at the end of a dirt driveway in the 12400 block of Southeast 280th Street. Cops arrived and asked Sosa Aquinaga to leave the barn, but he took off running, prompting a police dog to chase after him and stop him, reports say. Officers recovered a .357 revolver along the path Sosa Aquinaga ran.
The renter at the property told cops that a mutual friend dropped Sosa Aquinaga at the barn the previous night. He claimed he did not know Sosa Aquinaga, but he saw his revolver and was afraid of him, court records indicate.
Sosa Aquinaga remains held on $1 million bail.
Senior Deputy Prosecutor Adrienne McCoy wrote in court documents that had medics not intervened with "remarkable" aid Sunday night, the victim would have died.
