Russia had broken international law by the attack against Sergei Skripal, the US Department of state said. It is still open what sanctions are planned.

Because of poisoned former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal, United States has announced furr sanctions against Russia. The Russian government had "used chemical or biological weapons in violation of international law or used lethal chemical or biological weapons against ir own citizens," US State Department said.

The ministry shared that punitive measures would enter into force in about two weeks. First, US Congress will be informed of measures. The sanctions were not clear.

Sergei Skripal and his daughter Julia Skripal were poisoned with Nowitschok in UK in March. Both of m only escaped death. The United Kingdom and United States made Russian Government responsible for action. Nowitschok was developed in former Soviet Union, but later or countries also experimented with it. The Kremlin rejected accusations.

The case triggered a serious diplomatic crisis. As a consequence, around 25 states as well as NATO had expelled more than 140 Russian diplomats from country. The Kremlin reacted with expulsion of similar numbers of diplomats. The United States alone had declared 60 Russians "undesirable persons" and expelled m. U.S. President Donald Trump later accused Germany of having done too little in comparison. The federal government had expelled four diplomats.

The new US sanctions are based on law on control of chemical and biological weapons. It provides that US President imposes certain sanctions on States when y have used such weapons. This includes, among or things, prohibition of exporting certain goods and technologies re. Trump had come toger in Helsinki last month for a summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
