Emmanuel Macron celebrated, Wednesday, May 24, the 80th anniversary of the National Council of Resistance (CNR) at the site of its first clandestine meeting in Paris, in May 1943. The Head of State laid a wreath at 48 rue du Four in Paris, where on the mandate of General de Gaulle, the main craftsman of the CNR, Jean Moulin, brought together on May 27, 1943 the sixteen representatives of the forces of internal resistance to the German occupier.
The CNR, "by overcoming differences of opinion and the unwavering commitment of its founders, has made it possible to maintain France in the Republic", wrote the Elysée in a press release.
The President of the Republic "bows to the memory of those who kept alive and grew this spirit of resistance which is the soul of France, and which we will never cease to revive, from generation to generation, in the light of their burning embers,” added the same source.
Emmanuel Macron has asked that the graves of the participants in the first meeting of the CNR be flowered every May 27. On May 8, the Head of State paid tribute to the Resistance at the Montluc Prison Memorial in Lyon, in which nearly 10,000 people, including Jean Moulin, were imprisoned during the Occupation.
