The war in Ukraine has thrown many artists off track. How do you deal with such an existential trauma? An event at the ZKM in Karlsruhe is also about the possibilities of art.
Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - What can art do in the face of war? How should artists work? Which language helps to cope with the trauma? This Wednesday (5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) is the subject of artists from different countries at the Karlsruhe Center for Art and Media (ZKM). It is also about the question of the extent to which artistic work can be a communicative tool against war.
The Ukrainian curator Tatiana Kochubinska presents the Antiwarcoalition.art with selected works and an initiator of the platform, Antonina Stebur from Belarus. The international platform for cultural workers against the war in Ukraine and other parts of the world is both an archive and a discussion forum. She collects and distributes artistic statements against warlike aggression and political oppression.
The artists Laura Huertas Millán (Colombia/France), Nikolay Karabinovych (Ukraine) and Vladimir Miladinović (Serbia) will take part in the theme evening followed by a discussion. There will be a panel discussion at the end. The event is part of the "It's about Life" series, which is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Art.
Tatiana Kochubinska, former curator of the Kiev art center PinchukArtCentre, is one of the artists who fled Ukraine and have been accepted by the ZKM as a scholarship holder. The curator was in the midst of preparations for an international exhibition project in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro when war broke out.
The ZKM has been supporting politically threatened artists for a long time and works together with "Artists at Risk". The network arranges guest stays at cultural institutions.
