Baden-Württemberg: City Day: Situation with refugees cannot be calculated

According to the Ministry of Migration, around 170,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in the southwest, 142,000 of them are from Ukraine. There is a lack of space across the country.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The cities in Baden-Württemberg are preparing for the influx of further refugees from Ukraine, but according to the city council, the situation is unpredictable. "In many cities, communities and districts, people are currently in the process of creating additional accommodation capacities," said Executive Board Member Ralf Bross. Hotels would be rented in cities that did not have their own premises. Youth hostels would also be an option for accommodation.

According to the Ministry of Migration, around 170,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in the southwest so far, 142,000 of them are from Ukraine. The number of places in the country's initial reception centers has increased from around 6,000 to more than 13,500 since the first shots were fired at the Russian-Ukrainian border at the end of February. The temporary accommodation currently has room for around 55,000 people.

"At the moment we cannot calculate how many refugees will come to Baden-Württemberg before the harsh winter hits. That depends on various factors, such as the specific electricity and energy supply in the war zone and further acts of war," said Bross.

City council, district council and community council exchanged views with the Ministry of Justice about current developments every week in order to stay up to date. In addition, one is always in discussion with the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Education. "It's not just about the initial accommodation or subsequent accommodation of refugees, it's also about integrating children and young people into the care and school system," said Broß.

According to Broß, the solidarity of the people in Baden-Württemberg to provide help is still high. "If you notice the mood of the refugees on site, we assume that the majority of them will return to their homeland after the end of the Ukraine war."
