Baden-Württemberg: environmental activists block the congress center in Baden-Baden

Environmental activists briefly block the main entrance to the Kongresshaus in Baden-Baden. Reinsurers who also insure gas and oil projects are currently meeting there. The protest ends quickly and peacefully - and without anyone getting stuck.

Baden-Baden (dpa/lsw) - A group of environmental activists protested against the environmental destruction caused by fossil fuels in front of the congress center in Baden-Baden on Monday. Between 20 and 25 women and men sat on the floor at the entrance around 7 a.m. and put up posters on the building and glass windows, a police spokesman said. Beforehand, three of those involved climbed onto the canopy of the congress center and unfurled a banner. Representatives of the groups "Extinction Rebellion" and "Debt4Climate" claimed responsibility for the action. The action ended almost two hours after the protest began. According to the police, there were no incidents.

Contrary to the activists' own statements, neither an oil-like liquid was spread on the ground nor were people stuck, the police spokesman said. Instead, the demonstrators smeared themselves with a syrupy liquid.

An event by reinsurers has been taking place in the Kongresshaus since Sunday and will continue until this Wednesday. With the protest, the activists asked the congress participants to stop insuring any further oil, coal and gas projects.
