Baden-Württemberg: Environmental state institute: High fine dust values on New Year's Eve

Bad air from firecrackers? Thanks to Corona, the environment had a breather last New Year's Eve. That might change this time.

Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - More firecrackers and New Year's Eve rockets also mean more fine dust - the State Institute for the Environment (LUBW) in Karlsruhe points out. After the two Corona years, in which there was hardly any shooting on New Year's Eve, the authorities expect significantly increased fine dust values after midnight at the turn of the year.

The smoke from ignited firecrackers and rockets consists largely of fine dust. "How long the particulate matter stays in the air depends on the weather and local conditions," explained a spokeswoman. In inversion weather, with no wind or in basins like in Stuttgart, the air can be thick for longer. In an inversion weather situation, the upper air layers are warmer than the lower ones. This increases the fine dust pollution in the air. In the wind, on the other hand, the fine dust is blown away faster.

According to the LUBW, the fine dust limit value of an average of 50 micrograms per cubic meter and day has been complied with nationwide since 2018. The value may be exceeded on a maximum of 35 days.
