Baden-Württemberg: Exercise with 500 emergency services in the new railway tunnel

The high-speed line between Wendlingen and Ulm is intended to reduce travel times for rail passengers. A tunnel project has already been built. If you see a large number of emergency services there on Saturday, you probably don't have to worry.

Göppingen (dpa/lsw) - Rescue services are rehearsing an emergency on a large scale on Saturday (2 p.m.) in the tunnel of the newly built Wendlingen-Ulm railway line. 500 emergency services and around 100 vehicles from the police, fire brigade and rescue services are in action, said district fire chief Michael Reick from the Göppingen district office. A broken down train in the tunnel is simulated. Inside are extras playing passengers. The exercise is primarily about the coordination of the emergency services. The aim is to fight the fire and to rescue and care for the people in the tunnel.

The training takes place in the longest tunnel section of the new railway section, with a length of 15 kilometers and a slope. The rescue workers are supposed to reach the crashed train via the side of the two-tube tunnel that is not used. Intermediate links spaced 500 meters apart allow access.

The emergency vehicles position themselves beforehand on the adjacent country road 1214 between Aichelberg and Weilheim/Teck and then drive into the tunnel. This could lead to traffic delays, said Reick. Blockages are not planned.
