Baden-Württemberg: Government decides on register of climate measures: criticism

It is a toolbox in the fight for climate protection, and the ministries are now supposed to fill the "climate action register". The list is long, but the criticism is already loud. The register is not specific enough, it is also not sufficient. Now the country wants to defend itself.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - After the strong criticism in advance, the state government wants to decide on its so-called climate measures register today and defend it against opponents from environmental protection associations and the opposition. With a bundle of 254 measures so far, Baden-Württemberg is supposed to achieve its climate goals, but environmental organizations have so far hardly left a good hair on it. However, the state government itself has always emphasized that the register is just the beginning and that it needs to be expanded and processed.

In the register, the state government collects central measures that it takes itself and updates them on an ongoing basis. As in a kind of publicly accessible toolbox, the main aim is to record which purchases, conversions or reforms are intended to save carbon dioxide (CO2). The country has set itself the goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 and becoming climate neutral by 2040 - five years earlier than the federal government decided for Germany.

The measures were developed by the respective ministries. The progress of the measures is to be checked every year by the climate expert council appointed by the state. However, sanction options are not planned. In addition to the already known solar obligation on new buildings and the investment in green financial assets that has already been decided, the youth ticket is also part of the measures, as is the expansion of video technology in court processes and the preparation of a state development plan. Other projects are more concrete, including the construction of 20 express cycle lanes by 2030, projects for composting or organic waste and recycling.

After a long struggle, the green-black coalition had agreed on the register. With the amendment to the Climate Protection Act that has already been passed, Baden-Württemberg is the first federal state to enshrine specific targets for reducing CO2 in transport, buildings and the economy.
