Baden-Württemberg: High demand on public holidays pushes Kessler Sekt to its limits

Esslingen (dpa / lsw) - The traditional Esslingen winery Kessler Sekt can no longer deliver some varieties after the holidays. "The warehouse is empty," said company representative Achim Silberhorn on Monday of the German Press Agency. The most common sparkling wines from what they claim to be the oldest winery in Germany are no longer available. "Stuttgarter Nachrichten", "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and "Esslinger Zeitung" had previously reported.

The main business always falls in the last few weeks of the year, said Silberhorn. During this time, 30 percent of the annual turnover would be generated. However, the strong demand in recent weeks came as a surprise to the company. After the pandemic, the desire to celebrate returned, said Silberhorn. On the other hand, a high level of sick leave in the workforce puts a strain on production.

Beverage trade and gastronomy are affected by the bottlenecks - but Kessler sparkling wine can still be in stock in the beverage market. Kessler's own shops are also closed for the time being until mid-January. Silberhorn expects things to relax in the third week of January. "The next three weeks will be produced like crazy."

Kessler Sekt has existed since 1826. According to the company, around two million bottles of sparkling wine are sold every year.
