Lörrach (dpa / lsw) - The Lord Mayor of Lörrach, Jörg Lutz (independent) wants to explain the controversial conversion of old rental apartments into a refugee home on Wednesday (12.00 p.m.). The city invited to a press conference in the town hall at short notice. The managing director of Wohnbau Lörrach, Thomas Nostadt, should also have a say.
According to previous information, around 40 tenants are to move out of a residential complex to make room for refugees. The municipal housing company is to provide tenants with more modern and affordable housing options. The announcement sparked debate on social media and comment from state and federal politicians.
The pressure on the municipalities to accommodate more and more people triggers "desperate measures", said the SPD member of the state parliament Jonas Hoffmann in a video published on Tuesday. "This measure is probably one of them," added the deputy with a view to the step in the southern Baden city. The Lörrach MP complained that there was "not ideal communication" about the planned termination of tenants.
According to the city, the buildings are apartments from the 1950s. It had been planned anyway to demolish and rebuild it in the coming years because of its condition, it said. The affected tenants are to be informed on February 27 at a residents' meeting.
A refugee policy that does not control is "unfortunately social explosives," said CDU interior expert Philipp Amthor on the TV station Welt. The municipalities are overwhelmed with the accommodation of many refugees. Something like this happens not only in Lörrach, but also elsewhere, said Amthor.
