Mannheim (dpa/lsw) - The Mannheim coal-fired power plant wants to use a previous reserve unit again for a longer period of time in order to help save natural gas. Block 7 should be available from January until the end of March 2024 at the latest, the operator announced on Monday. From January onwards, a total of four blocks will run in the power plant, which will be operated with hard coal, as a spokesman added on request.
Block 7 has been in the grid reserve since May 2020 by order of the Federal Network Agency. It could therefore only be requested when needed in order to ensure security of supply and grid stability. Originally, the company wanted to shut down the kiln.
The basis for use is now the law of the federal government on the availability of replacement power plants. The system can provide electricity for up to a million households. "With this step, our company is making an important contribution to saving gas in the context of power generation in order to be able to ensure the supply of people and industry in the event of an existing gas shortage," said CFO Holger Becker.
