Baden-Württemberg: More corona vaccinations in the southwest again: appeal to older people

In view of the high number of corona cases, the Ministry of Health is appealing to older people in particular for the second booster vaccination. Now there is an increasing demand.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - In Baden-Württemberg, more people have recently had a corona booster vaccination. Nevertheless, the Ministry of Health in Stuttgart continues to call on people over 60 in particular for the second corona booster.

A spokesman for the ministry said that many more people would have to have the second booster vaccination in order to be well protected in autumn and winter. According to this, almost 23 percent of the over 60-year-olds in the southwest have received a second booster vaccination – with a slight upward trend. Nationwide, the proportion of those over 60 is already more than 29 percent. Around 84 percent of those over 60 in the southwest have had their first booster vaccination. In the population of Baden-Württemberg as a whole, it is 61 percent.

Unlike last autumn, the demand for corona vaccinations is rather low this year. The vaccination capacities in the country were sufficient everywhere, the spokesman said. About 38,500 appointments have been booked via the internet portal for vaccination appointments since the portal was launched at the end of September. There are currently almost as many free dates to choose from. The majority of the bookings are for the second booster vaccination and the vaccines adapted to the Omicron variant, said the spokesman.

According to the ministry, the corona booster vaccination can be administered at the same time as dead vaccines, for example against influenza and pneumococci.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) currently recommends the second booster vaccination for people over the age of 60 or with previous illnesses. According to Stiko, a vaccine adapted to the omicron variant should be used. In Germany, vaccines from Biontech/Pfizer and Moderna are approved.
