Baden-Württemberg: More money for temporary teachers

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The Ministry of Education has made it clear that temporary teachers should in future be paid over the summer holidays - but the new regulation does not apply to completed trainee teachers. Minister of Education Theresa Schopper (Greens) spoke on Sunday of an important signal from the budget commission of the green-black coalition. "The current challenges in particular show us how important people with fixed-term contracts, such as our substitute teachers, are in reacting to absences." There are more than 4,000 teachers here, including educators who teach refugee children and young people from Ukraine. The cost is estimated at 15 million euros.

With the new regulation, the leaders of the green-black coalition are fulfilling a long-standing demand from the teachers' unions. Green parliamentary group leader Andreas Schwarz had pushed for it, which initially caused trouble in the CDU parliamentary group and in the state and finance ministries. However, the CDU side was unable to reject the Greens' demand because a party conference recently voted to end the regulation. Nevertheless, there were voices that did not see this expenditure of 15 million euros per year as a priority.

The Education and Science Union (GEW) said the perseverance was worth it. "The clocks have changed and temporary teachers should finally be paid during the summer holidays," said GEW Vice Farina Semler. "The substitute teachers are the lifeline for schools." However, the GEW will continue to work to ensure that the summer holidays are also paid for the completed trainee teachers.
